Are you thinking of running away from all your problems, the injustice, the lack of support, the cost of living, the traffic, the palm trees, your entire friend circle and the town you’ve called home for nearly 25 years?
Me either.
One of my private clients, Lisa, shared a quote with me that her friend used to tell her kids when they were being bratty:
“Isn’t it a shame that you have to take YOU with you wherever you go?”
Perhaps you saw my socials this past week and noticed we were living our best Nashville lives with extended family in, you guessed it Nashville (Belmont/12 South to be specific). I suggested this trip right after the fires hit LA because we needed a spring ‘break’ and I could feel Beau and I needed a new adventure.
We are not moving there.
Yet.
I mean, Never Say Never - Justin Bieber - omg my laptop’s autocorrect just fixed Bieber’s last name. That’s how you know you’ve made it. We need to pray for that young man. That’s another story entirely…
The food in Nashville is incredible.
The buildout of shops, boutiques, outdoor malls, markets, live music and whatnot is on the rise.
The people are incredibly kind.
Their city and surrounding neighborhoods have exploded with new folks (from what a shop owner in Franklin told me, 95% of incoming residents are Californians) and the locals are as delightful and hospitable as ever.
My family went to Easter service at Church of Avenue South because my amazing and legendary sister in law Jess is the cousin to Aaron Bryant, former Titans player turned pastor - it was epic. Moving. Welcoming. Vibrant. There were like 7 Vanderbilt football players attending and serving that community. The music was insane. It was a breath of fresh (literal) air.
In defense of Los Angeles, I have found Californians to be some of the coolest, loveliest, gracious, friendly people I’ve met any where and yet what it requires to survive in that city can suck the joy out of everything. I say this while simultaneously thinking of the quote from above.
You are always, without fail, the common denominator in your life.
It’s you.
You bring the fun.
You bring the complaints.
You bring the perspective.
You bring you.
Thankfully I’m a pro at gut checking myself and recognizing when I’m the problem…which if you’re following … is all the time. Taylor was 100% correct.
I am always the problem and the minute you let that land you realize you are almost always the solution.
You don’t need to move across the country to the cutest, kindest, vibrant, vibe-y town but IF YOU DID, that would work out too.
Because wherever you go, there YOU are.
OKAYILOVEYOUBYEEE,
xx
